Reference state: two property tables, one hidden offset

Subtract two states inside one table and the reference point cancels. Mix two tables and it does not. Check whether your sources differ by a constant before you trust a difference.

Live result

The two changes are 40000.000 and 40000.000 J/kg. A constant offset cancels.

Live chart
Two sources across two statesSource A runs from 100000.000 to 140000.000 and Source B from 400000.000 to 440000.000, both in J/kg. The offset is 300000.000 at the first state and 300000.000 at the second, so the offset drift is 0.000.100,000270k440kJ/kgState 1State 2Source ASource BOffset 1 · 300kOffset 2 · 300kOffset drift · 0.000Offset 1 · 300kOffset 2 · 300kOffset drift · 0.000

Equation trace

  1. Convert both sources to the canonical unit.
  2. Subtract state 1 from state 2 within Source A.
  3. Subtract state 1 from state 2 within Source B.
  4. Calculate the Source B minus Source A offset at each state.
  5. Subtract the two offsets and reconcile that result with the difference between the two changes.

Boundary

This comparison is valid only for the same property at the same two physical states and on compatible bases, and it does not reconcile different phases, compositions or state definitions.

Related

  • General material balance: five terms, and the zeros are the assumptionsA vessel runs steady and another fills slowly. One balance describes both, and it has five terms: input, generation, output, consumption, accumulation. Most working arithmetic writes three of them as zero and never says why. The zeros are the model. Name what each zero claims and the ledger closes on a residual you can read instead of a number you have to trust.
  • Recycle and purge: the boundary never sees what the equipment carriesFresh feed goes in at 120 kmol an hour and product and purge come out at 120, so the plant balance closes on the figure it opened with. The reactor inlet reads 444. Recycle never crosses the outer boundary, so no overall balance can show it, and the purge fraction that stops the inert piling up is the same figure that sets how hard the loop circulates. Type four numbers and the whole loop solves in one pass, with no separator to configure and nothing looked up.
