Distribution tails: the same moments, different worst days

Two distributions can share the same mean and the same variance and still carry very different worst days. The moments you quote do not pin the tail.

A places 0% outside the threshold and B places 20%, on the same mean and the same variance.

The equal moments

For A, the equal weights at −1 and +1 cancel to mean zero and give variance one. For B, (−12×45)+(2×15)=0(-\frac12\times\frac45)+(2\times\frac15)=0(−21×54)+(2×51)=0, while ((12)2×45)+(22×15)=1((\frac12)^2\times\frac45)+(2^2\times\frac15)=1((21)2×54)+(22×51)=1.
P(∣A∣>k)=0,P(∣B∣>k)=15,1<k<2P(\lvert A\rvert > k)=0,\qquad P(\lvert B\rvert > k)=\frac15,\qquad 1<k<2P(∣A∣>k)=0,P(∣B∣>k)=51,1<k<2P(∣A∣>k)=0,P(∣B∣>k)=15,1<k<2\begin{gathered}P(\lvert A\rvert > k)=0, \\ P(\lvert B\rvert > k)=\frac15, \\ 1<k<2\end{gathered}P(∣A∣>k)=0,P(∣B∣>k)=51,1<k<2

where P(∣A∣>k)P(\lvert A\rvert>k)P(∣A∣>k) is A's tail probability and P(∣B∣>k)P(\lvert B\rvert>k)P(∣B∣>k) B's tail probability, for thresholds between 111 and 222.

Worked example

At k=1.5k = 1.5k=1.5, the values −1 and +1 of A are both inside the threshold, so its tail probability is 0. In B, −0.5 is inside and +2 is outside. The outside point carries probability 15\frac1551, so B's tail probability is 0.2. Both distributions still have mean 0 and variance 1.

Between one and two there is no support point in either distribution except B's value at plus two, so every admitted threshold returns the same twenty point gap.

This construction does not estimate real tail risk, identify a distribution from data, or determine adequacy.
